Are you working on a ground-breaking project, or maybe you have received a prestigious award? Perhaps you have organised an event that may be interesting for our community. Whatever it is, we want to hear about it!
You can share your news, events and updates with the Sussex community via a number of different channels managed by the Internal Communications team, including our Staff and Student Hubs, internal newsletters and our community-focused social media.
Publishing a story on the Staff Hub or Student Hub
The Internal Communications team manages the news and events feeds on the Staff Hub and Student Hub areas on our website, which are aimed at staff and students respectively.
You can publish your news story or an event via Broadcast, the University’s news and events system. All staff have access to Broadcast and publishing content does not require a high level of technical knowledge. There is a Broadcast manual available for those submitting news stories and events for the first time, and guidance to help you write engaging stories for our website. If further support is needed, please speak to your local communication colleague or contact Internal Communications at internalcomms@sussex.ac.uk.
As a general rule, articles on the Staff Hub and Student Hub must follow the Sussex house style, which helps us to be clear and consistent. In addition, they should adhere to the following guidelines:
- News stories should ideally be 300-400 words in length
- They should be written with a broad audience in mind
- All news stories will need to have an image (350 pixels wide, 225 pixels high) - please see for more information about getting images for a project, including the website. If you need to resize an image, use Adobe Spark's user-friendly tool.
- Do not copy your article from an online document saved in Box as this causes formatting issues. Instead, download a copy of your article or event and open it in the desktop version of Microsoft Word before copying it to Broadcast
- Please do not submit events as news stories.
Once your story is submitted, Broadcast will ask you to select the channels where you would like it to appear:
- for the Staff Hub, please select: ‘University of Sussex staff news and events’
- for the Student Hub, please select: ‘University of Sussex students news and events’.
You might also want to assign your story to your School channel - please speak to the colleague responsible for communications in your School about that.
Featuring your content in our newsletters
We want to feature your news and events in our all-staff newsletters, This week at Sussex and Sussex in focus. Find out more about the type of content featured in each newsletter and how and when you can submit your content.
On Box you can also see content guidance covering our newsletters for all taught students, which are created by the Student Communications and Campaigns team.
The Sussex Researcher School runs the newsletters PGR Connections and The Sussex Researcher, which are aimed at postgraduate and Early-Career Researchers. Find out more about their schedule and submit your content.
Don’t forget to promote it on Viva Engage
Viva Engage, formerly known as Yammer, is our University social media platform where you can join or create communities, catch up on the latest campus news or just find out more about what interests you.
Viva Engage is an informal channel run by our community for our community, so feel free to share your interests and hobbies, including those outside work.
If you would like to get in touch with either Staff or Student Communications, please email internalcomms@sussex.ac.uk.
