We recently reached out to our students for tips on how to make the most of your university experience at Sussex. The answers varied from engaging with university support services to enjoying our beautiful surroundings and taking part in multiple extracurricular activities.
Speak to your lecturers
Many of you pointed out the importance of seizing every opportunity for academic growth, including engaging with your lecturers and utilising office hours. These sessions offer invaluable time to clarify concepts, seek advice on assignments, and deepen your understanding of course material. So next time you have a query, don’t be shy and reach out to your tutors and convenors. They are here to help you thrive!
Use the University services and resources
The University of Sussex has a plethora of resources designed to support you in your student journey:
The Student Centre brings together our student support services. You can use our online portal, My Sussex, to get advice on any topic, from wellbeing and disability support to money advice, and raise enquiries.
The Skills Hub has lots of resources to help you with your studies, including support around referencing and revision.
The Library is open 24/7 during term time. On the website you can book study rooms and access online resources and subject guides.
We offer dedicated career support and advice. Through the Career Lab you can find opportunities to develop your skills and boost your career prospects.
You can also join Sussex Connect which is a good place to network and seek advice from former students who are now working in industry.
By taking advantage of all the services and resources that Sussex has to offer, you can enhance your skills, expand your network and make the most of your time as a student.
The University also organises lots of free cultural events on campus, such as Sussex Universe - a series of free evening lectures that brings together experts from diverse STEM fields about the groundbreaking research they are carrying out at our University. Check the Student Hub and find out about all the events happening on campus.
Try new things
University is a time to meet new people, discover new perspectives, find new hobbies and get involved in lots of new activities. Many of you suggested joining a student society. There’s more than 180 societies to choose from, covering all sorts of themes and interests. If you don’t know where to start, you can read our previous edition of Flint where we compiled a list of societies recommended by students.
Don’t forget to log in your Spirit of Sussex Award points for your extra-curricular and voluntary activities.
There’s always something to do in Brighton, from live music and stand up comedy to exhibitions and workshops. We’re looking forward to the Brighton Festival in May, which is the largest curated annual arts festival in England. As official Higher Education partner of the festival, Sussex will be putting together a series of events led by the School of Media Arts and Humanities.
Embrace nature
With the days getting longer, why not make the most of university life by getting out and enjoying nature? Several people mentioned going for walks around campus as a way to recharge and clear their minds.
Take a break from studying and head out for a hike in the nearby South Downs or spend a lazy afternoon on the seafront. You can take a bus to Seven Sisters from Brighton to enjoy the beautiful views from its chalky cliffs. Explore the South Downs Way national trail website for other hiking routes ideas.
