Professor Steven McGuire, Dean of the University of Sussex Business School, is leaving the University in May 2024 to take up the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
Professor McGuire has been Dean of the Business School since 2015, and is also a member of the University Executive Team. He was previously Director at the School of Management and Business at Aberystwyth University. During his time at Sussex, he has continued to supervise PhD students and teach classes at Sussex on non-market strategy and international business.
Steve has overseen a period of huge change at the Business School, including a new structure and brand in 2018, the introduction of online Masters qualifications, achieving two of the highest accreditations for business schools - EQUIS (European Foundation for Management Development Quality Improvement System) and AMBA (Association of Masters of Business Administration) accreditation in 2019, and the launch of the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy and the Digital Futures at Work Research Centre (Digit Centre) in 2020.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil, said: “Steve has been absolutely central to the huge success of the Business School during the last decade. Under his leadership the Business School has grown significantly in scale and impact, particularly in research, and through his membership of the University Executive Team the whole University has benefitted from his wise counsel and business acumen. He will be greatly missed but I am delighted for him about this appointment and I wish him all the best for the future.”
Professor McGuire said: “I am immensely proud of what the Business School has achieved since I became Dean in 2015. It has been a wonderful place to work, full of hugely knowledgeable and skilled staff and students with a passion for learning and a drive to succeed. There have been many changes over the years I have been here, including most notably our new name and shape in 2018, which was part of the strategy aimed at placing Sussex among the best business schools in the UK.
“I am proud of the research strength of the school, with major research centres now established and a vast array of rigorous, impactful research being published. Indeed, there is no other business school in the UK with the research breadth we possess. Our students are amazing and go on to do incredible things. One of the best parts of this job is meeting our alumni and seeing how they are getting on.
“Whilst I am sad to leave behind so many wonderful colleagues and friends, I am confident that the school will continue to prosper and prepare many future generations of business leaders. Thank you to everyone across the school and the University for your knowledge, trust, belief and support.”
Interim arrangements for the Dean of the Business School role will be announced shortly, whilst permanent recruitment takes place.
