The University of Sussex Business School has launched a new mode of doctoral study, allowing aspiring researchers the opportunity to combine a one-year Master of Research (MRes) course with a three-year PhD research programme.
The Integrated PhD offers the depth, rigour, and focus of a PhD, while developing research and employability skills. The programme includes an initial year of Masters-level modules and rigorous training in the research skills needed to become a skilled practitioner, as preparation for PhD-level research.
Through the taught modules, students gain a meaningful progression point and all the s upport needed for a PhD. On successful completion of the taught element of the degree, students are ready to progress to the research phase of the PhD, where they continue to receive training and develop more advanced research and publishing skills including writing, winning grants, and stakeholder engagement.
Director of Doctoral Studies, Dr Marianna Marra, said:
“We are excited to announce the launch of our Integrated PhD programmes (iPhD), designed to redefine doctoral education and enhance students' research skills and employability. The iPhD is a programme that goes beyond traditional doctoral offerings. It incorporates the essential elements of existing PhDs offered by the University of Sussex Business School while introducing an additional structured taught first year. This innovative curriculum covers Quantitative Methods, Analytical Methods, Qualitative Methods, Empirical Design, and Programming, providing students with a solid foundation in research methodologies.
“The programme offers two distinct pathways in Economics and Finance or Innovation, Management, and Policy, allowing students to tailor their education to their interests and career goals. Leveraging the Business School's world-leading research, students benefit from a comprehensive and impactful learning experience. Throughout the years, students will engage a social and learning community experience with their peers and supervisors.
“A central focus of the iPhD is employability. At the programme's conclusion, graduates will be skilled research practitioners equipped with advanced skills applicable to academia, business, government, and non-profit organizations.”
Dean of the Business School, Prof Steven McGuire said:
“The new iPhD marks a significant change in our approach to PhD training. Creating a more standardised and comprehensive core of methods training means stronger research skills for our doctoral researchers. Moreover, the creation of more commonality among PhD programmes via the iPhD helps create a proper community of doctoral researchers.”
