We hear about Cyber Security everywhere, both in our work and our personal lives. But what is it? Why does it matter? And critically – what can you do to play your part in keeping us all secure?
What is Cyber Security?
Put simply, Cyber Security is the way that individuals and organisations can reduce the risk of cyber-attack. It exists to protect our data, the devices we use and the services we access from loss, theft, or damage.
Why does it matter?
Cyber threats affect us all. Whether it’s keeping your world-leading research secure, making sure university finances are not compromised or keeping your personal data safe from hackers, there are lots of very good reasons to know about and practise good cyber security behaviours.
Playing your part
Colleagues in the IT Services team are constantly working to improve the University’s systems and processes which help us to mitigate the risks of a successful cyber-attack.
But it’s not just up to them to keep us secure – we each have a responsibility to do all that we can to keep the University, ourselves and each other safe from cyber threats.
The Cyber Security awareness campaign
Today we are launching a new Cyber Security awareness campaign for Sussex staff.
You can watch an introduction to the campaign below from Professor Michael Luck, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost:
We need you to engage with the campaign, complete the associated training, talk about it amongst your teams and share ideas with your colleagues. And of course, if you need any help or further assistance, please do let us know.
