Franz Schubert Unfinished Symphony
Music from the Lord of the Rings
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2
Celebrate the end of term and the Festive season with a truly romantic concert, including Schubert's lyrical and plangent two movement Unfinished Symphony (which featured in Deception (1946) starring Bette Davis), and one of the most famous concertos for solo piano and orchestra, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 (which was the soundtrack to the famous British film Brief Encounter (1945) starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard in the story of a love affair). Completing the evening is a suite of music by Howard Shore, from the fantasy films Lord of the Rings (2001-3).
Frederic Collinge, our piano soloist, is a member of the orchestra and currently a Maths MSc student in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
The University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra traces its history back to 1969 and a concert with Ian McEwan, Beethoven and Stravinsky which it recreated at the ACCA in 2019! The orchestra is mainly non-auditioned, very friendly, and brings together musicians from many disciplines and Schools, including students and staff, and from the wider community. It is student-led and operates as a society within the University of Sussex Students Union. It is kindly supported by the Meeting House through provision of rehearsal space.
