Professor David Ruebain
Freedom of speech and its boundaries will be examined and explored in an upcoming lecture by Professor David Ruebain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Culture, Equality and Inclusion). Staff and students are invited to join the event, which will be held on campus on Wednesday 15 November from 5pm-6pm.
Debates about freedom of speech can be polarising and often engage wider issues of identity, belief and safety. Along with a deep-rooted institutional commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, Sussex seeks to uphold, protect, and advance freedom of speech, but the meaning of ‘freedom of speech’ is not always understood and sometimes may clash, or appear to clash, with other commitments or legal obligations.
This lecture, titled ‘Freedom of speech – can you draw a line?’ was first given on Monday 2 October as the first in a series at King's College London. It explores the boundaries of freedom of speech, problem areas and its intersection with equality and inclusion. During the event, there will also be an opportunity for questions and reflections from the audience.
This event is open to everyone, but spaces are limited so please book your place.
