For those of you arriving at Sussex for the first time, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and maybe a little nervousness. This pivotal moment, leaving behind the familiar and venturing into the unknown, can be both exhilarating and daunting.
To help welcome our new students and give them a glimpse of what to expect, we took to Instagram to ask current Sussex students: "What's one thing about the University of Sussex that makes you feel at home?"
Comfort food
Food was a common theme in many of your responses. Whether that’s grabbing some Mexican food from Tortilla at Eat Central or home cooking with friends. Why not take it in turns to cook your favourite meal for your flatmates?
Between the city and the South Downs
Sussex’s position near Brighton and the coast, but also at the edge of the South Downs National Park is clearly a big plus for many of you. Whether you're happiest chilling on the beach, getting out into nature, or on a big night out, there’s something for everyone here. Best of all, you don’t have to choose! Heading out and getting to know your local area is a great way of helping you settle in.
The University as a community
Many of you cited the sense of community on campus as an important part of feeling at home here. As one current student put it: “The vibe at the uni is the same as a little town where everyone sees each other most days.” Joining a society or sports club is a great way of getting more involved with the University community and meeting like-minded people. You can also attend the events organised by the Belong at Sussex programme, which are designed to bring all students a sense of belonging throughout your time at university.
Our University isn’t just about the academics; it's about the flavours, the scenery, and the people that make Sussex a place where students feel like they truly belong. We know that arriving here is a big step and we’re here to support you in settling in. If you’re struggling with homesickness you can find more guidance and support on your Student Hub.
