Belong at Sussex is a new programme that aims to bring all students a sense of belonging through year-round activities. Events are co-created and hosted by Student Connectors from diverse backgrounds, ensuring they are student-focused and carefully catered for with each group in mind.
As we approach the end of the academic year, we are reflecting and celebrating the success of the programme so far. Here are some of the highlights.
Student-led events
Throughout the year, our Mature, Parent, Carer and Commuter Connectors have held Welcome Week activities, film screenings, casual socials and skills workshops.
The Disabled Students team organised the Disabled Students' Information fair, Learn BSL session, crafts activities and coffee and chats.
The Refugee and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller team hosted a movie night, cultural food event and a quiz for One World Week.
The Care Experienced and Estranged Students team organised the Standing with Estranged Students event and a Canine Cuddles session, and schemes like a Valentines' Chocolate Giveaway and birthday gifts.
Around 50 students have taken part in the Belong in Nature series of events, which offered various accessible opportunities to connect with nature locally, including a popular trip to take in the views at Devil’s Dyke.
Recently, we held our first Family Fun Day in the Student Centre. The event was a hit amongst parent students and their families, who enjoyed a wide range of activities. Seeing so many of our student parents having fun with their little ones on campus was great!
All of these events have been fun, friendly, supportive, and a great way for students to connect and socialise with like-minded people, supporting community and providing inclusive spaces whilst raising awareness and promoting a sense of belonging here at Sussex.
Finishing off the year, Connectors have supported the Voice Project, where students from diverse backgrounds showcase their stories through music, photography and creative writing. The work produced will be exhibited at ACCA on Friday 2 June, as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival.
Student and staff highlights
“It was really refreshing to actually see people doing a degree later in life like me.” – Mature student
“The ranger and National Trust workers were very informative and the walk was lovely!” – Belong in Nature attendee
“Really lovely day, lots to do but not overwhelming for young ones, was good to show them around and for them to see where I study.” – Family Fun Day attendee
“It’s been a fantastic first year of the Belong at Sussex programme. My highlight would be our Belong at Sussex Community Lunch.
