The Societies Committee has nominated the Turkish Society and Islamic Society as joint Society of the Month for February and March!
The two societies have fundraised a lot these past couple of months, with the Turkish Society fundraising for the relief effort following the earthquake in Turkey, and the Islamic Society fundraising for Ramadan taking place soon.
The Turkish Society is one of our Culture and Language societies that represents and unites students while celebrating Turkish culture and cuisine.
Following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey in February, the University of Sussex Turkish Society fundraised £7,200 to support the relief efforts for the earthquake victims. The society hosted bake sales and donation drives over the weeks following the earthquake. The donated items were transported by trucks to Turkey and delivered to AHBAP. The amazing energy of the volunteers and contributions from all involved enabled this massive support to take place.
The Islamic Society is one of our Spiritual and Religious societies that represents our Muslim community at Sussex, creating a safe space to practise their faith.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed as a holy period of reflection, fasting and prayer. The Islamic Society organises free, daily Iftar meals for each day of this month. Iftar is the evening meal at sunset that breaks fast. The society has been fundraising to provide these meals in the weeks coming up to Ramadan and will continue fundraising during Ramadan. Providing free Iftar is a chance to bring together and support the diverse Muslim community at Sussex for both students and staff during this holy month.
