Looking after your mental wellbeing at university

It can sometimes be hard to remember to look after ourselves, especially at university. Today (Monday 20 March) is the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness, and there’s no better time to reflect on the things which make us happy, help us stay well and manage the stresses and strains of student life.
Why is it important?
Mental health, and wider wellbeing, can affect all areas of our lives. Sometimes we only think “I should really do something nice for myself” on the harder days, but it’s important to try and look after ourselves during the better times too.
Looking after your wellbeing
The New Economics Foundation researched and developed the ‘Five ways to wellbeing’, which are five simple areas of life we can all try to develop techniques in.
Connect
Connecting with other people is great for our wellbeing. It can give us a sense of belonging, help to create a supportive network, and give us people to talk to and have fun with. If meeting people in person is difficult, online support like Togetherall can also work. Find out more about meeting people on the Student Hub.
Be active
Physical activity is proven to reduce stress and anxiety and can improve your mood too. It doesn’t have to be a heavy gym session – walking, rollerblading and dancing all hit the spot. Doing these things outside can be especially good. See more reasons to be active.
Take notice
Paying more attention to the present moment (your thoughts, feelings, body and the world around you) can help to lift your mood, or notice when you might need some support. The University chaplains run free mindfulness and meditation sessions in the Meeting House.
Learn
Learning new skills can help build our confidence, sense of purpose and connection with others. Trying a new hobby can give us a chance to relax and use a new part of our brains too – away from the stress of deadlines or other worries. Look at what Students’ Union societies and events are running.
Give
Acts of kindness, however small, create positive feelings and increase self-worth and purpose. It doesn’t need to be a grand gesture; small things like asking someone about their day or making someone a cup of tea can have a positive impact on your wellbeing. You can even do things for yourself.
Please follow the wellbeing team’s Instagram account for updates on wellbeing events and campaigns. These include our weekly wellbeing stall in the Student Centre atrium, which runs from 12-2pm on Thursdays during term-time.
You can also register for mental health support if you feel like speaking to somebody would be helpful (or register here if you’re a BSMS student).
