Brighton Festival is the annual celebration of arts, culture and creativity in Brighton and Hove, and the largest curated annual arts festival in England.
This year, for the first time, the University of Sussex has been recognised as the Higher Education Partner for Brighton Festival and we are delighted to provide you unique access to the festival programme and the chance to attend events co-created by students and academics from the University.
Not only is the festival a big moment in the county’s cultural calendar, it’s a great opportunity to see some fantastic performances and exhibitions, and take a well-needed break from your studies.
As part of our partnership, the festival will include four events co-delivered with the University of Sussex Festival of Ideas, taking place at various venues across the city, and more events being held on campus, in partnership with the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA).
Here are some of the University of Sussex events taking place as part of Brighton Festival 2023, delivered through collaboration with the University’s School of Media, Arts and Humanities:
- The Live Archive, hosted by Erin James, the most recent recipient of the Stuart Hall fellowship at the University of Sussex, encompasses a radical reimagining of archival research through poetry and performance; and
- Music for Girls, which will take the form of a panel of artists, writers and listeners for an afternoon of conversation and activities exploring collective music histories and lost memorabilia.
Events co-presented with the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts include:
- Glory to Sound with Anita Rani and Nabihah Iqbal, inviting you to experience and explore the power of music and the ways in which it connects us; and
- Munroe Bergdorf: Transitional, which welcomes Munroe Bergdorf to the stage with her life-affirming, heartfelt and intimate book, Transitional.
Take a look at the whole Brighton Festival programme. With over 100 events to choose from, there is something for everyone!
Students and staff will also be able to take advantage of free and discounted tickets nearer the time. Keep an eye out for more details on the Student Hub, as they’re announced.
