Professor Kelly Coate, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, wrote to all taught students earlier today. You can read the full message below:

Hello,

The diversity of our community is one of the things that makes Sussex special.
 
This is especially valuable in a world where, at times, some people may not feel that they have more in common with each other, than that which may set them apart.
 
That’s why we are so fortunate to study, live and work in an academic community like ours – where we are able to disagree, challenge each other and critique established views, as a means to advance our individual and wider academic knowledge.
 
Of course, to ensure that we have the freedom to do this, we must understand that we and others must not only endeavour to treat each other respectfully and with kindness but also act within the law. We will not tolerate any form of harassment, bullying or discrimination, whether that be from anyone in our community, or those outside of it if they visit campus.
 
We have support in place should you experience or witness unacceptable behaviours such as these. Please let us know using our Report and Support tool. If you ever need to speak to someone or need support, you can contact the Student Centre. Our security services are also available 24 hours a day, 365 days a week.
 
A testament to our diverse and kind community is the celebration of One World Week, which is a partnership between the Students’ Union and the University. I hope you are looking forward to getting involved in lots of cultural events and fun next week. University Mental Health Day

Today (Thursday 9 March) is University Mental Health Day. Sussex alum @benjy_lookbook has shared three tips on improving our mental wellbeing with kindness on our TikTok account.

Remember that our student support and wellbeing services are here throughout the year if you need professional help on a wide range of issues. These services include counselling, group workshops and drop-in clinics, alongside online support options like Togetherall and resources to look after your mental and emotional health.
 

Final-year students – tell the world about your time at Sussex

Thank you to those of you who have already completed the National Student Survey (NSS). If you haven’t taken part yet, don’t forget you can complete the NSS now. It’s your chance to tell the world about your time at Sussex and help future students to decide what and where to study.
 
For every finalist who takes part, we’ll donate £1 to a charity of your choice (vote for your favourite here).
 

Mature student skills day – enjoy a wide range of workshops and a free dinner

The University’s Student Experience team has organised an afternoon of skills development workshops for mature students. This is a great chance to invest in yourself and your development while you meet other mature students. Come along and enjoy a free communal light evening meal, gain career and personal development skills and work towards your University-accredited Spirit of Sussex Award.
 

Upcoming industrial action

As I have mentioned in previous updates, Sussex is one of 150 universities where University and College Union (UCU) members have voted in favour of industrial action over pay and working conditions, and one of 67 who are striking in relation to the USS pension scheme.

On the Student Hub you can find upcoming dates for this nationwide industrial action, when some staff may exercise their legal right to strike. Following a two-week pause, the next strike action days will be Wednesday 15, Thursday 16 and Friday 17 March.

Football match at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday 15 March

Brighton & Hove Albion will be playing Crystal Palace on Wednesday 15 March at the Amex Stadium. Please be aware this might create some congestion around campus and Falmer train station from 4.30pm and plan your trip accordingly.
 

Last chance to nominate your favourite lecturer for a Sussex Education Award

The Education Awards recognise members of staff – both academics and those in professional services – who truly embody the spirit and values of the University. This is your chance to thank the staff who have made a difference to your experience as a student. Please submit your nominations by midnight on Friday 10 March.
