Speaker: Nicholas Phillipson (University of Edinburgh)

Intellectual history is the art of setting ideas in their historical context. Intellectual biography is the art of setting an author’s texts in the context of their own intellectual development. This lecture will consider the problems involved in setting Smith’s life and thought in these perspectives.
Nicholas Phillipson is Honorary Research Fellow in History at the University of Edinburgh. His most recent work, Adam Smith: An Enlightened Life was published in 2010 by Allen Lane.
This lecture is free to attend and open to all. It is hosted by the Sussex Centre for Intellectual History.
