If you’re a current Sussex student, enter our Pitch for the Planet student innovation competition for the chance to win some funding and a coveted spot in our summer accelerator programme to help you develop a sustainability idea.
This year’s competition theme is ‘Sustainable Sussex’ and aims to bring together and implement ideas on how we can achieve our goal of Net Zero Carbon by 2035, alongside other areas of our University of Sussex Sustainability Strategy, in partnership with our local community.
Previous winners include Sustainable Fashion Collective, who have held several Thrift Fairs on campus to reduce clothes waste, and Trees for Graduates, a business that enables friends and family to purchase trees as graduation gifts which are then planted locally.
You can enter Pitch for the Planet, as an individual or as a team of up to 6, by completing our online form by 10am on Wednesday 8 February.
Shortlisted entries will be invited to pitch to a panel led by the Vice-Chancellor, Sasha Roseneil, at our live, in-person event on Tuesday 28 February 2023 at the ACCA.
We’re offering up to four prizes for proposals to maximise sustainability at Sussex in the following areas:
-
Ethical Educators – embedding sustainability in student experience teaching and research
-
Decarbonising the Economy – reducing carbon as we work to create a net zero world
-
Civic Leaders and Partners – supporting sustainability in the community, including sustainable travel and supply chains
-
Environmental Champions – creating responsible production and consumption in areas including food, water, waste and biodiversity.
See the Sustainability Strategy for more information on what is included in each category.
Make sure to read all the information available here, about eligibility and what we are looking for. Entering the Pitch for the Planet competition will not restrict you from also entering the Startup Sussex competition. If you have a social impact idea, you are encouraged to apply for both competitions.
You can contact us on sustainable@sussex.ac.uk with any questions.
