Sussex appoints new Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost

The University of Sussex has appointed Professor Michael Luck as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost.
Professor Luck is currently Director of King's College London’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence. As well as a Professor of Computer Science, he is also Director of the UK Research and Innovation Centre for Doctoral Training in Safe and Trusted Artificial Intelligence. He has previously held the positions of Head of the Department of Informatics, and subsequently Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at King’s. Prior to that he was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, and Lecturer at the University of Warwick.
Professor Luck is a Fellow of King’s College, a Fellow of the European Association of Artificial Intelligence, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
Vice-Chancellor Sasha Roseneil said: “The appointment of Michael Luck as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost is hugely exciting for Sussex. Michael is an internationally renowned computer scientist, and he has a record of transformative and inclusive academic leadership. At King’s he played a major role in the development and success of science and engineering, and in the realisation of significant estates projects. He brings highly valuable expertise to the senior team at Sussex, and I am greatly looking forward to working with him as we create plans for the next phase in the life of the University.”
Professor Luck said: “I am delighted to take on the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at Sussex. It’s a truly respected university and I am looking forward to contributing to the excellent work being done and helping to support in achieving its priorities and long-term vision.”
Professor Luck will provide University-wide leadership, developing, and ensuring delivery of, the University’s academic vision and strategy, and holding responsibility for academic planning and resources, and academic capital planning. He will deputise for the Vice-Chancellor in all areas of the University’s work as and when necessary.
Professor Luck will take up his new position on 1 September 2023.
