Last Wednesday (16 November), the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil, held one of her regular Open Office sessions for students. Held twice a term, they provide students with an informal opportunity to share their experiences at Sussex with the Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Roseneil spoke with students about the University’s wellbeing and financial support services, food waste and sustainability, processes such as requesting documents from the University, student housing, the cost-of-living crisis, how universities are funded, and the new West Slope development.
Hannah Oh (pictured above) is studying her final year of a BSc in Computer Science and Al in the School of Engineering and Informatics. She expressed her appreciation of the support that her School provides to students, and particularly to international students like her. Hannah is a member of Sussex PAL (Peer Assisted Learning), a scheme in the Department of Informatics where student mentors help their peers with course queries.
After the event, Sasha said:
“I love meeting with our students and hearing about their experiences at Sussex. I’ve only been here for a few months, but every time I meet with students, I see how engaged and passionate they are about being a member of the university community.
“These sessions are an opportunity for me to listen to students’ feedback directly. It is an interesting and meaningful way to hear about what is working well, and what we need to do better, to enable all students to make the most of their time here at Sussex.”
Attending a VC Open Office for students session is one of many ways you can share your feedback and let University staff know what is going well and what could be improved. You are welcome to book a 15-minute slot for a one-to-one meeting, bring a friend, or, if you are involved in a society, bring another member with you. The next event will take place in the Student Centre from 10am to 11.30am on Thursday 9 February 2023.
If you would like to book a slot, please email the Student Communications team at internalcomms@sussex.ac.uk with the subject “Student session with the Vice-Chancellor”.
