West Slope preparations continue

Our campus is like a small town, and much like we need the essentials of a shop, post office and a good coffee, we also need some hidden essentials like sewage systems and drainage pipes!
Over the past few months we have been busy preparing our campus utilities for our new West Slope development and one task underway is to install 550 meters of new sewage pipes through the centre of campus, which will support both our new and existing buildings.
New pipes
The next step in upgrading our sewage system is to connect the old and new pipes underground. With several litres of wastewater and sewage travelling through our pipes every second, it’s essential that the current system keeps flowing whilst the new pipes are connected, so will be installing temporary overground sewage pipes that will divert flows whilst new pipes are connected.
The first of these overground pipes will be installed in the construction area next to Arts C from mid-November and will be in place until February 2023.
Further overground pipes will be added to the construction area in front of Essex House during January and February 2023.
What to expect
As these temporary pipes will be overground, they won’t be sealed to the same extent as underground pipes, and you may notice some bad smells from time to time. We are doing our best to reduce the chance of odours by enclosing the pipes, but any smell will also be impacted by wind directions and outdoor temperatures, so please bear with us until the new system is up and flowing!
