Implementing the Real Living Wage – changes to spinal pay points

The University recently attained accreditation as a Living Wage Employer and took the choice to pay the new rate of £10.90 per hour from 1 October 2022, although it did not need to be implemented until 1 May 2023, to support staff with the cost of living crisis. To introduce the new Real Living Wage rate, the University has decided that spinal point 10 will become the lowest point paid on our pay scale, as point 10 represents an hourly rate of £10.94.
In order to maintain pay differentials between grades 1, 2 and 3, the University is merging grades 1 and 2 into a single grade which will go from spinal point 10-12, with point 12 being discretionary. The start of grade 3 will move from point 10 to point 12. This means grade 3 will consist of spinal points 12-17, with 15-17 being discretionary points.
All grade 2 staff currently on spinal point 8 or 9 will be moved to spinal point 10, and all grade 3 staff at spinal point 10 or 11 will be moved to spinal point 12. This change will be effective from 1 October 2022, however changes will be processed and backdated on the November 2022 payroll.
