The University of Sussex has announced that Dr Dean Machin has been appointed as Chief of Staff and Director of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
The Chief of Staff is a new role and will co-ordinate the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and provide her with senior advisory support on strategic and complex issues. He will also assist the Vice-Chancellor in communicating with, and co-ordinating the University’s leadership team and liaising with the wider University community.
Dr Machin will take up his role on 12 December.
Dr Machin has worked at the University of Portsmouth as an adviser to the Vice-Chancellor since 2016. Prior to that he was an academic specialising in political philosophy. Dean has taught at UCL and been a Leverhulme early career research fellow at the University of Warwick. He has written multiple blogs on higher education, and in 2015 wrote a report on data-sharing for the Social Mobility Commission.
Dr Dean Machin said: “I am very pleased to be joining the University to support the new Vice-Chancellor and senior management. Sussex has a wonderful history and a great future and I am honoured to have the opportunity to be part of it. I am really looking forward to getting started.”
