Biodiversity Week at Sussex

Join us for a range of biodiversity events happening on our campus (and on the beach) throughout the week of 25-29 April!
From helping to improve the biodiversity of our campus, to dancing on Brighton beach and cleaning up litter, to learning about biodiversity in Brazil - there’s something here for everyone.
Wednesday 27 April: Silent Disco Brighton Beach Clean
Love music and hate litter? Register here for our silent disco beach clean with Surfers Against Sewage to join your fellow Sussex students and staff in cleaning up Brighton seafront from 4.00-6.00pm.
Rubbish left on the beach poses a threat to marine life, so come and do your part to help keep the plastic out of the ecosystem and protect our coastal biosphere.
The clean will be led by Kelly Coate, the PVC for Education and Students, and our charity partners, Surfers Against Sewage, who tirelessly campaign for cleaner oceans.
Litter-picking equipment and silent disco headphones will be provided, just bring your dancing shoes!
Wednesday 27 April: Anti-colonial ecologies: Indigenous art and resistance in Brazil
Interested in the effect of capitalism on indigenous communities in a developing country?
Join us in the Jubilee Building (Room G30) from 4.00pm-6.00pm to hear from various artists and academics during a seminar on how the indigenous people of Brazil react to the colonial conquests on their lands and livelihoods.
Damaging industries in indigenous territories have accelerated their expansion since the Covid-19 pandemic, here is your chance to learn about the importance of biodiversity from an international perspective and connect with others with similar interests.
This seminar is co-hosted by ONCA Gallery Brighton and the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP).
Thursday 28 April: Big Biodiversity Conversation Events
Do you want to be involved in improving biodiversity on and around our campus?
Book your tickets to come along to our three-part Big Biodiversity Conversation at the University of Sussex Conference Centre from 2pm-7.30pm
Part 1: The Big Biodiversity Workshop (2.00pm-5.00pm)
This is an interactive workshop with staff, students and stakeholders. It is an opportunity for our community to come together to pick their favourite biodiversity projects, form teams to lead them and seek seed corn funding for our Race for the Planet campaign (amongst other sources).
Part 2: Networking Reception (5.00pm-6.00pm)
Want to meet like-minded students, staff, and external stakeholders who are passionate about biodiversity and find your tribe?
Come along to network with other participants over plant-based food and refreshments.
Part 3: Stop the Mass Extinction: Speaker Event (6.00pm-7.30pm)
Join our Provost Rachel Mills as she introduces fantastic speakers from our university and beyond to give their views on how we can stop the 6th mass extinction and join a welcoming Q&A session on the topic.
Speakers include:
- Dr Joanna Smallwood, Lecturer in Law, University of Sussex – The role of the COP and the legal system in tackling the biodiversity crisis
- Dr Chris Sandom, Senior Lecturer in Biology and SSRP Board Member, University of Sussex – The role of universities in tackling the sixth mass extinction

Further networking and drinks will be available after the event until 8.30pm
