Next week sees the return of One World Week at Sussex!
One World Week events aim to share cultures, raise awareness of global issues and highlight international opportunities for our diverse Sussex students and staff. There will be loads to get involved with on campus, and events are open to all Sussex students and staff.
For Shreya Bhatia in the Institute for Developmental Studies, One World Week is a chance to meet people from different Schools and find out about each other’s cultures, languages, traditions, and aspirations as well as to network for future work opportunities.
Stan Rogozinski, who is studying an MSc in Mechanical engineering, says “as a Student Connector in the Internationalisation at Home Team, I hope to help create opportunities for students to experience different cultures without having to go abroad. One World Week is a great opportunity to do just that.”
As it’s typical of One World Week events, there will be plenty of delicious free food to try! The Sikh Society will be hosting the annual Langar, an event that embodies community and togetherness and invites everyone to share a meal and connect with one another, regardless of ethnicity or belief. Sussex STAR (Student Action for Refugees) and University staff will be hosting ‘A Dish is Worth a Thousand Words’ - a food, information and storytelling event in support of our students and community from forced migrant backgrounds. Or maybe you can be enticed by an evening of Korean reality game show activities and traditional Korean food hosted by the Sussex K-pop society. If low key and relaxed is more your thing, then Chai and Chill over some board games with the Sussex Bangladesh Society sounds like it’s going to be fun!
The Language Café will be running a special One World Week edition, and Psychology student Hannah Austwick is looking forward to attending: “I think it will be a great experience to learn a bit about a wider range of unfamiliar cultures and participate in some meaningful conversations about internationalisation within our campus in a fun way.”
The fantastically vibrant South Asian festival of Holi will be back in Library Square once again at the end of the week. And a big community celebration will also be taking place at The Business School Global Fair, where all Sussex students and staff are welcome to enjoy some free food from international local businesses - a chance to hear stories from Business School international students and staff on their ‘Journey to Sussex’, and an international fair.
The whole programme of events will shortly be available online at One World Week — University of Sussex Students Union.
