Dear students,
On Tuesday, David Maguire, our Interim Vice-Chancellor published a message to show our support for those affected by the events in Ukraine.
If you’ve not already done so, please do read his statement about how the University is helping those impacted, and if you are able to, you can show your support through donations to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Ukraine emergency appeal.
Watching the events in Ukraine unfold can be upsetting, and if you would like to speak to someone about this you can access a range of support via the Student Hub’s Health, Support and Wellbeing page.
Finally, Sussex is a place where people study, work and live together in relative harmony, but it is also much more than that – our campus is a microcosm of the world, with students and staff from over 160 countries. This gives me great hope that a better, more peaceful world is possible.

Sustainable Sussex Week
In July 2021, we published Sustainable Sussex, an ambitious new strategy that includes our target of becoming net zero by 2035. This week, we're celebrating Sustainable Sussex Week in partnership with the Students’ Union’s Climate Justice Week.
Sussex students, staff and the wider community are all key partners working to co-create solutions for our planet, and Sustainable Sussex Week is a chance for us to collectively commit to change. Sign up for one of this week's events and help us make the University a beacon of sustainability.
New Covid-19 guidelines
It is no longer a legal requirement to self-isolate. But we are encouraging all students and staff to follow university guidance to help reduce the impact of Covid. You can check the Student Hub for our latest covid-19 guidelines.
Please note Covid isolation payments have ended. You have until Monday 7 March 2022 to submit a late claim using our reporting form.
Choose your option modules for next academic year
The option module selection process for the next academic year (2022-23) commences on Monday 7 March. The system will open at 8.00am in Sussex Direct so you can browse next year's option modules.
The live selection process will start on Monday 14 March at the following times:
- 9.00am for years 2 to 3
- Midday for years 1 to 2
- 12:01am on 14 March for years 3 to 4 and 4 to 5
Recycling Info genius competition
Win up to £500 for helping your fellow students improve their recycling. We're looking for participants to create content for one of two categories:
- how to recycle signs for our external recycling bins
- awareness-raising material for students, such as videos, social media posts and web content.

Hosting an event for One World Week
Finally, you'll still have the chance to host an event for One World Week (14-20 March).
One World Week is a series of events to share cultures, raises awareness of global issues and highlights international opportunities for our diverse Sussex students and staff community. Previous years' events include Holi, calligraphy lessons, international games night, and cooking classes.
Find out how to register your event and apply for funding and/or support.
With best wishes,
Kelly
