On 16 August 1961, the University of Sussex received its Royal Charter. In the 60 years since, Sussex has made it possible for thousands of students from across the globe to access a University education, regardless of their backgrounds.
Throughout its history, Sussex has welcomed under-represented groups: from working class people in the 60s, to South African exiles in the 70s and 80s, to care leavers and asylum seekers today. Now, in our diamond jubilee year, our Anniversary campaign aims to further our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Thanks to an astonishingly generous bequest from a visionary alumnus, we are marking our special birthday by supercharging our 60th Anniversary campaign with 100% matched funding of new gifts of £1,000 or more in this academic year.
The projects that you can support through this matched scheme include:
- The Sussex Fund (hardship, well-being and happiness)
- Article 26 Scholarships (full scholarships for refugees and forced migrants)
- The Mandela Scholarship (supporting the next generation of Southern African leaders)
- Law Clinics (protecting migrants and asylum seekers)
“After going through a traumatic experience that was unforeseen and out of my control, I found it difficult to recover to the healthy physical and mental state I was in before. I look forward to feeling confident in my abilities again, focusing on my future and fulfilling my goals. Ultimately, I hope that I will be able to make a positive impact on the well-being of others. I am so grateful for the support of the Sussex Fund.”
Harriet, UG student
Thank you for choosing this moment to show your support for your university and for helping us to give every student the best experience of Sussex. That really is something to celebrate!
