Business School achieves the UK Top 10 for Economics in new 2021 global rankings

The University of Sussex Business School is a Top 10 institution in the UK for Economics overall, according to the 2021 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects published by Shanghai Ranking. In addition, the School is within the Top 20 for academic subjects business administration, finance and management.
At a global level, the School is ranked 76 – 100 out of 500 institutions for Economics overall. The University of Sussex is placed within the Top 200 worldwide. More than 1,800 out of 4,000 universities across 93 countries and regions are listed in the final published rankings.
The rankings are focused almost entirely on article publications and citations, with significant awards to members of staff (such as the Nobel Prize, Fields Medal etc.) included for certain disciplines. Universities are ranked in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
The Business School is ranked in the following subject areas by category:
Management (out of 49 institutions)
- first in the UK for journal citations (Category Normalized Citation Impact - CNCI)
- 6th in the UK for international collaboration and co-authorship (IC)
Business Administration (out of 49 institutions)
- 4th in the UK for international collaboration (IC)
- 5th in the UK for journal citations (CNCI)
Economics (out of 55 institutions)
- 6th in the UK for journal citations (CNCI)
- Joint 8th in the UK for the number of papers published in journals in the top quartile Journal Impact Factor during 2015-2019
Finance (out of 24 institutions)
- 7th in the UK for journal citations (CNCI)
Professor Steven McGuire, Dean of the Business School said:

Last November, four faculty at the Business School were listed in the top 1% globally for the most cited academic research papers. Constantin Blome, Professor of Operations Management, Benjamin Sovacool, Professor of Energy Policy in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), Steven Sorrell, Professor of Energy Policy in SPRU, and Adrian Smith, Professor of Technology and Society in SPRU were included in 2020 Highly Cited Researchers List compiled by Clarivate Analytics.
