SCIH Autumn Term news

Knud Haakonssen, the Director of SCIH, is Visiting Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, Uppsala, in the academic year 2010-2011. He will be lecturing on ‘Toleration and Subscription: An Enlightenment Debate’ at the Institute for Philosophy and Religion, Boston University, in December 2010 and giving the 'Plenary session address' at the conference of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies at Graz in July 2011. Richard Whatmore, the Associate Director of SCIH, will be in charge while Knud is away.
SCIH welcomed Brian Young (Christ Church, Oxford) on October 21 2010, who gave the first John Burrow Lecture in Intellectual History. The lecture is now available as a podcast.
Nicholas Phillipson (University of Edinburgh) will be giving the next Sussex Lecture in Intellectual History on 28 February 2011, 18.00-19.30, Arts A5 on Adam Smith: An Intellectual Biographer’s Perspective. Everyone is welcome.
This Autumn SCIH will be launching a new MA programme in Intellectual History and new open access databases derived from the manuscripts of James Mill and of Etienne Dumont.
SCIH will also launch a website devoted to Tom Paine and Sussex, and another, in conjunction with the Universities of Lausanne and Neuchâtel, on the History of European Political Thought.
SCIH will be advertising the first John Burrow PhD Studentship soon. Inquiries to Richard Whatmore.
