The University of Sussex remains among the top 25 universities in the UK, according to the latest publication of global rankings.

Sussex is the 23rd highest ranking UK university, and 161st overall, in The Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings 2019 which were published this week.

The University scored particularly well for international outlook, which measures ratios of international to domestic staff and students, and the proportion of research featuring international co-authors, where the University was just outside the top 50 universities in the world.

Out of the 13 metrics used to establish the ranking, the University saw a rise in nine areas including teaching reputation, research income and industry income.

Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell said: “It is pleasing to see the University perform so well in terms of international outlook, particularly given some of the challenges in the current climate, as the University prides itself as having global reach and global impact.

“It is also positive to note that we have made improvements in the majority of metrics over the past 12 months and we have exciting plans which we hope will ensure further improvements in time for the 2020 rankings.”

The latest edition of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2019 were released on 26 September 2018, featuring 1,258 universities from over 80 countries, with more than 150 additional universities included this year.

Universities are eligible for inclusion if they: teach undergraduates, published more than 1,000 research papers over a five-year period between 2013 and 2017, and have a broad range of activity.

This year’s rankings saw the UK deposed as the second-most represented nation in the rankings. Japan has overtaken the UK for the first time, with 103 entries compared to 98 from the UK.

Subject-level rankings for the 2019 THE will be released in the upcoming weeks.
