The Students' Union Trampolining Club celebrate their BUCS victory

Sussex students are celebrating the end of the sporting season with a run of victories in the past fortnight.

Final year BMEc student Isaac Stoute was ranked amongst the top three men's student singles tennis players in the country last week, after winning silver at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) national Tennis Championships.

Isaac made it to the finals at last weekend's Championships in Loughborough (21-22 April), which attract the highest level of student athletes on the circuit.

Competing in the men's individual finals against Durham University's Filip Veger, an established Croatian player on the international circuit and top-seeded in the Championships, meant Isaac had exceptionally tough competition - eventually losing out in the final stages to take home the silver.

Commenting on the challenge, Isaac said: "The field of competition at the BUCS Individuals tennis tournament was the toughest it has been during my three years at university, with several players having just come off of the the pro-circuit.

"I knew if I was going to achieve, I had to compete at my best level."

"Sussexsport's Sport Scholarship Scheme has helped me reach that level, with access to expertise in sports psychology, nutrition and strength and conditioning. 

"Terry Cooper, who runs the Scheme, has been a huge aid to my progress. He trusted in my vision, which enabled me to succeed."

Isaac has been on the Scholarship Scheme throughout his time at Sussex, which is delivered by Sussexsport and supported by the Sussex Fund through generous gifts from alumni and friends of the University.

After graduating this summer, Isaac is hoping to secure sponsorship and enter the pro-circuit.

The Students' Union Trampolining Club is also celebrating after bringing back a haul of BUCS medals from the recent national Championships.

The club performed exceptionally, with four students: Will Cash; Emily Smalley; Joe Jukes and Joe McDonnell making it all the way to the final.

Postgraduate student Joe came home with a silver medal and Emily, a Life Sciences student, triumphed over 100 competitors to win gold!

The sporting successes are the latest in a run of victories, with Sussex sweeping the board in a trio of cup final wins last month.
