The School of Business, Management and Economics (BMEc) Careers Festival 2018 proved a great success with students and employers.
On 21 February 2018, the Business Liaison and Placements team welcomed students from across the University to BMEc’s very own Careers Festival. The Careers Festival was put on in conjunction with the Make it Happen! Careers in Business, Marketing and Finance event, which was organised by the Careers and Employability Centre.
Students were given advice on the roles open to graduates, finding opportunities, and how to maximise their chances of a successful career in business.
Careers exhibition
The evening started with a careers exhibition, where students could speak to a range of employers about the opportunities they offer, including:
- Adeptis
- Entrepreneurial Spark
- EY
- Plus Accounting
- Sussex Innovation Centre
Make it Happen! Careers in Business, Marketing and Finance
A talk on careers in business, marketing and finance followed, where students heard the stories of a range of Sussex alumni speakers from the area of business and finance, offering advice, information and inspiration. Speakers included:
- Christian Heeger - Director, Grant Thornton (Maths & Statistics, 1987)
- Jahmella Robinson - Independent Consultant, Financial Services Sector (Economics 2011)
- Alex Hannibal - Investment Analyst, HSBC (Economics, 2013)
- Philip Agnew - Head of Product Marketing, Brandwatch (Marketing & Management 2016)
- Katie Gifford - Technology Solutions Professional, Microsoft (Marketing & Management, 2017)
The talk was part of Make it Happen! fortnight, a series of events designed to give an insight into different careers, expand ideas, develop skills and enable students to make contacts. Once the talk had come to an end, students and staff were able to network with the exhibitors and guest speakers over a glass of wine and nibbles.
Julian Viani-Pericchi, Project Co-ordinator (Business Liaison and Placements), commented: “We were delighted to see all the exhibitors as well as a good number of students from across the University attend the Careers Festival! It was great to see students interact with employers as they start planning ahead, whether it be for their professional placement year or for their careers after they finish their time here at Sussex.”
The BMEc Business Liaison and Placements team would like to thank all of those who attended and helped to make the event a success.
