The University of Sussex is one of the biggest climbers in The Times Good University Guide 2011, published today (27 May).

The University shot up 14 places from 35^th to 21^st in the highly influential Times league table of 113 UK universities, making Sussex the highest climber amongst leading universities - the Russell and 1994 Groups - at the top end of the table.

Sussex scored particularly well in the categories for student satisfaction, good degree results and graduate prospects.

The news follows on from the publication last week (20 May) of the Independent's Complete University Guide rankings, which placed Sussex in the top 20 universities - a rise of six places.

The strength in depth of academic activity at Sussex was shown in high rankings across the arts, sciences and social sciences.

Twenty-two subjects at Sussex were in the top 30 in their respective areas:

American Studies (4^th), Social Work (4^th), Art History (7^th), Anthropology (8^th), Education (13^th), Media Studies (13th), Psychology (13^th), Biology (14^th), Sociology (14^th), Physics and Astronomy (15^th), Politics (16^th), Chemistry (16^th), Philosophy (17^th), Business Studies (18^th), History (20^th), Law (24^th), Mathematics (24^th), Geography (24^th), Music (26^th), Mechanical Engineering (26^th), Computer Studies (27^th), and Economics (29^th).

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, welcomed the latest ranking, saying: "I am delighted for the staff and students at Sussex - whose calibre is reflected in these latest rankings.

"Two influential league tables - giving the most up-to-date picture of UK universities - have confirmed that Sussex is taking the right approach: focussing on world-leading research; providing an excellent all-round student experience; and investing in the campus.

"We have also shown how Sussex can grow and develop even in difficult economic times. Applications from home students for autumn 2010 are up by 30% (nearly double the national rise) and from overseas students by 65% - as students recognise the quality of what we offer at Sussex.

"We continue to grow and develop the University. We will be welcoming hundreds of new students in the autumn to new facilities such as a new teaching building, new degree programmes and improved student services."
