An expert in the economics of education from the Sussex School of Business, Management and Economics has been appointed to the technical advisory group at the UK’s Department for Education from November 2017.
Reader in Economics Dr Shqiponja Telhaj is an internationally recognised researcher in the field. Over the next four years, Dr Telhaj will provide the Department with independent guidance and recommendations on increasing the supply of both Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) teachers.
The STEM initiatives Dr Telhaj will advise on include a series of targeted interventions covering the academic years 2015/16 to 2020/21. The objectives of these interventions are to increase the overall number of maths and physics teachers in England and Wales to help close the annual recruitment gap, and to improve the quality of maths and physics teaching.
On the MFL side, Dr Telhaj will advise on interventions designed, among other things, to support MFL teacher recruitment.
As a member of the advisory group, Dr Telhaj will advise on the evaluative and analytical aspects of these programmes, as well as on related processes and the measurement of their impact.
