A new bookshop opened on campus this week, as work continues on a £6.4million 'reinvention' of the Library.
John Smith's bookshop has moved from its premises in Bramber House to the entrance floor of the Library, which is five months into a £6.4million project to turn it into the primary location on campus for study, learning, research, personal development and social interaction.
The new shop, which will be open 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday, can be entered before going through the electronic barriers at the front of the Library to allow it to be used by staff, students and visitors alike. A new spacious café adjacent to the bookshop, with a covered all-weather courtyard area, is due to open in mid-May.
Anyone visiting the new shop before 14 May could win a Nikon digital camera, by filling in a competition entry form in-store.
The relocation of the bookshop means that work can begin this summer on the modernisation of Bramber House, a major feature of a £10million project to overhaul catering provision on campus. The work comprises the remodelling and refurbishment of both the ground and first floors and the installation of a new central kitchen.
The main aim of the investment in catering is to enhance the experience of all customers on campus, including students, staff and visitors. Another key objective is to support Catering Services in delivering a financial surplus, ensuring reinvestment in the facilities in future years.
Sarah Wilkinson, Commercial Operations Manager at the University, said: "The relocation of the bookshop into the Library was a logical move - the two are a good fit.
"It also means that we can push ahead with the exciting plans we have for Bramber House, which is very much at the heart of our catering strategy. In some ways it is the final piece in the jigsaw after the opening of the Arts Piazza this year and revamped cafes in the Medical School, Chichester and, soon, in the Library."
The refurbishment of the Library started in December 2009 and is due for completion in the spring term 2011.
