A leading consciousness scientist at the University of Sussex has today (Tuesday 4 October) been named one of Wellcome’s engagement fellows for 2016.
The fellowship will allow Professor Anil Seth, co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science, to explore new ways of combining cutting-edge research into the biological basis of consciousness with innovative approaches to public involvement.
He will take up his three-year fellowship later this year, dividing time between his research and his passion for engaging the public in science.
Professor Seth said: “Consciousness is one of the eternal mysteries and modern science is finally starting to reveal its biological basis. And while it may be tempting to take consciousness for granted, neurological and psychiatric illnesses are stark reminders of the fragility of the complex brain mechanisms that make you you.
“Capitalising on my active research, my fellowship supports research-driven public engagement of the science of the ‘edges of consciousness’, as they appear in the clinic and in the laboratory.
“Projects across a variety of formats will engage many different public, professional and scientific communities in the thrilling adventure of consciousness science.”
Wellcome’s Engagement Fellowships scheme has been running for six years. It supports emerging leaders in science communication or public engagement who are looking to develop their practice.
Recipients have used their fellowships to explore new ways of thinking about science and its wider cultural contexts.
Previous fellows have explored surgical simulation, poetry, citizen science, art, TV presenting and writing.
