The University of Sussex is now the seventh most successful university in the UK in terms of career prospects for students, show results published today (Monday 23 May) in the Guardian University Guide 2017.
Now firmly placed in the top 20 in all major UK university rankings, the latest Guardian league table places the University of Sussex at 20th overall.
The University retains its position as the top place to study Chemistry in the UK and is now the second-best place for American studies.
The University has 14 other subjects placed within the top 20 of subject rankings including:
- anatomy & physiology
- anthropology
- biosciences
- drama & dance
- English & creative writing
- history
- history of art
- law
- medicine (BSMS)
- philosophy
- physics
- psychology
- social work
- sociology
One of the most significant areas of growth for the University over the past year has been around the transition for students into employment, with the University leaping 17 places to seventh out of 119 institutions.
The University places great emphasis on establishing industry links for its students, especially those who have joined from lower-income families. The latest data shows that 90 per cent of its 2015 graduates who had qualified for the University’s First Generation Scholars scheme are now in graduate-level employment or further study. For the University’s overall student population this remains high at 88 per cent.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing commented: “We care passionately about the career prospects of our students and it’s extremely encouraging to hear that those graduating from Sussex are increasingly successful in making the transition into the workplace.
"We want students to leave Sussex and move into flourishing careers that continue to challenge and stretch their minds and those around them, for many years to come. We’re pleased that so many of our subjects are placed in the top 20 and we will work hard to push for even more to be featured so highly next year.”
The University of Sussex has confirmed its place in the top 20 in all three major UK league tables. As well as being placed 20th by the Guardian University Guide, it is placed 18th by the Complete University Guide and 19th in The Times/Sunday Times guide. It is also in the top 20 of the Times Higher Education’s 'Table of Tables'.
