The University of Sussex has been ranked 11th in the world for its efforts towards campus sustainability and environmentally friendly university management.
The Green Metric Ranking of World Universities for 2015, released on Friday 22 January 2016, places Sussex 11th overall in the world out of 407 participating universities from 62 countries. This is a rise of ten places since the 2014 ranking.
The table considers the following criteria:
- Setting and infrastructure
- Energy and climate change
- Waste management
- Water usage
- Transportation
- Education
The new ranking follows ongoing improvements in a number of areas, including reductions in energy usage and subsequent reduction in associated emissions; and improvements in handling waste from campus and the recycling of that waste.
For 2015, Sussex finished fourth out of the 15 UK universities in the table, and 17th out of 34 universities classified as having rural campuses.
Matthew Arnold, Energy and Environmental Manager for SEF (Sussex Estates and Facilities), said: “This good result reflects the ongoing steps we are taking to reduce energy usage and increase energy and environmental awareness across the campus.
“It recognises the performance and activities that have taken place in the 2014-15 academic year, and highlights our success in energy and environmental key areas.
“However, what we have achieved so far still represents only a small step towards our bigger, long-term aims. We will take these results and use them to target areas to improve on further in next year’s league ranking.”
John Duffy, Registrar and Secretary, commented: “We are striving to create a sustainable university, with a well-functioning and reliable infrastructure that is environmentally sound.
“This improvement in our ranking is a pleasing recognition of the ongoing progress we have made in recent years, together with our partner SEF.”
The UI Green Metric World University Ranking, launched in 2010, is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia.
