Mary Kaldor

Mary Kaldor is Director of the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit at the London School of Economics (LSE) and CEO of the DFIDfunded Justice and Security Research Programme.

Mary researched and lectured at the University of Sussex for nearly 30 years, covering such subjects as military technology, arms control, human rights and contemporary European studies.

She joined LSE in 1999 and was made a School Professor in 2001. Her research on military technology, contemporary conflicts, humanitarian security and global civil society has been influential in both the scholarly community and among policy-makers in government and international institutions.

In 2000 Mary was a member of the International Independent Commission for Kosovo. In 2003 she became the convener of the Human Security Study Group, reporting to Javier Solana when he was High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU.

She was a founder member of European Nuclear Disarmament – a Europe-wide movement for a nuclear-free Europe. She also founded and co-chaired the Helsinki Citizens Assembly, an NGO dedicated to peace, democracy and human rights.

Mary has authored many books including The Baroque Arsenal, New and Old Wars: Organised Violence in a Global Era and Global Civil Society: An Answer to War
