Jamison R. Firestone is a graduate of Tulane University, 1988, and Tulane Law School, class of 1991. After the opening of the USSR, Jamison went there to aid US companies navigate the Russian legal system. As a partner at the firm of Firestone Duncan, Jamison served as legal counsel to Hermitage Capital Management, the largest foreign owner of Russian shares in 2005.
Eventually he and his coworkers uncovered a government scandal which saw members of the judiciary, mafia, police, and tax office collaborate in large scale (£140m) tax refund fraud. The scandal resulted in the assassination of his law partner, Sergei Magnitsky, leading the USA to pass legislation banning the involved Russian officials from entering America in a namesake bill.
This lecture will focus on the idea of the rule of law as it relates to corruption, drawing on the speaker's experience as a lawyer practicing under corrupt political and legal regimes.
