The University of Sussex has been ranked 17th in the UK for research in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015, published yesterday (Sunday 21 September).
Sussex is also placed among the UK’s top 25 universities overall and fourth out of the 17 universities in south-east England.
The guide provides the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain and is used by prospective university students to decide where to study.
Professor Michael Farthing, Vice-Chancellor, says: “It is fantastic that this guide rightly recognises Sussex as one of the country’s and region’s top universities.
“We’ve always had excellent teaching and research but we have also invested a lot of effort and resources into other aspects of the student experience, such as helping students find a career and become more employable, better IT and Library infrastructure, and new, state-of-the-art buildings and facilities.
“And with a beautiful campus near vibrant Brighton and less than an hour from London, it’s easy to see why more students than ever before have chosen to study at Sussex this year.
“We’ve got big, ambitious plans for this year and beyond, which we hope will see us firmly and consistently ranked in the UK’s top 20, where we belong.”
The guide also highlights particular subject strengths for Sussex. Four subject areas are in the top 10: American Studies (3rd=), Anthropology and Social Work (8th) and History of Art (10th).
Sussex’s performance is due to greatly improved graduate prospects (54.4% to 76.1% and a ranking movement from 99th to 28th) and the increased services and facilities spend.
