A lucky University of Sussex music student has realised one of his dreams by playing with guitar legend Jeff Beck.
Guitarist Luke Machin, 20, is studying a BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM Brighton), whose degrees are validated by the University of Sussex.
Jeff Beck visited the music college while playing Brighton on tour to offer advice to 80 current guitar students and demonstrate why he was ranked 14th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time'.
The iconic guitarist worked as a session player with Screaming Lord Sutch and the Tridents before he replaced Eric Clapton as The Yardbirds' lead guitarist in 1965. In 1967 he formed The Jeff Beck Group, which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ronnie Wood on bass. Before Stewart and Wood left to join The Faces, the band released two albums that became musical touchstones for hard rockers. Beck was inducted into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' earlier this year.
During his visit to BIMM he led a jamming session with Luke and other degree students before signing the school's 'wall of fame'. The college arranges masterclasses throughout the academic year with experts from across the music industry and they all sign this special record of visits.
Luke owned his first guitar aged three and recently won the BIMM Student of the Year award. He said: "The whole experience was incredible and I can't believe how lucky I've been to have played with such an amazing player as Jeff. I'm really looking forward to building on this as my career moves forward."
