SUSS-EX CLUB

NEWSLETTER No. 34, July 2015

This newsletter advertises three different future activities, and offers booking forms.  This may seem rather early for some, but it is driven by providers’ deadlines, and experience of the problems which can arise in getting tickets if application is not made promptly – and to give members early notice of plans may make it easier for diaries to be organised.  The activities advertised overleaf are:

Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads at the Theatre Royal, August 11-13; booking forms needed by July 31.

Brighton Early Music Festival, La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’Isola di Alcina, the first opera by a woman, Sunday Nov. 8th; booking forms needed by Tuesday Aug. 18th

Talk and supper with Nick Tucker: British Children’s Books: a somewhat strange history, Friday 9th October; booking forms needed by Tuesday Sep. 18th (but why not get it done now?)

The most recent Suss Ex activity – a tour of new developments on campus:

Charles Dudley gave us a very interesting talk on the history of campus development, followed by a guided tour, from the Attenborough Centre to student accommodation, for two groups led by members of Residential and Campus Services staff; one group is seen in Colin Finn’s photo above.  We finished with an excellent cream tea.  Many thanks to all!

           Theatre Trip

Three of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads comic monologues, described as ‘darkly comic, poignant and uplifting and widely regarded as modern classics’, are coming to the Theatre Royal for August 11-15, starring Stephanie Cole.  The ticket price for groups is ฃ24.50 for evenings (this time there are no group reductions for matinees).

As usual, a trip will be organised if enough people (at least 10) sign up for one date for us to get the group reduction.  Dinner together beforehand will be booked for those who would like it.  This special summer-holiday treat is being organised at short notice, so prompt replies are specially important.  If you are interested, let Jenญnifer Platt know by the morning of July 31 (preferably by e mail to j.platt@sussex.ac.uk - or phone 01273 555025, or post to 98 Beaconsfield Villas, Brighton BN1 6HE).  Please use the form provided if possible: just mark the days when you are free, numbering them in order of preference, and indicate the number of tickets wanted and whether you would like to join a group for dinner.  You will be notified of the outcome, and asked for the money if we have got tickets, very soon after July 31st.

People who already have tickets from other sources, or would just like an informal social meal, have sometimes joined the party for a meal, and that is welcome.  If you would like to do that, please let Jennifer know in good time so that a large enough table can be booked, and she’ll let you know when the group is going.

♪♫        BREMF for Early Music        ♪♫

This year, Bremf [Brighton Early Music Festival] has the music of women as its special theme – ‘celebrations of WOMEN - as composers, performers, inspirational characters, muses and symbols’.  They figure as from the court to the carnival, from nuns to witches.  What we propose to attend is a highlight of the programme, a fully staged production of La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’Isola di Alcina by Francesca Caccini - the first surviving opera by a woman composer.

The opera is fairly short, and there are to be two performances, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, on Sunday Nov. 8th.  It is to be performed in the Old Market in Hove, so we could conveniently cross the road for a meal in Greek restaurant Archipelagos (pleasant service, good food, inexpensive).

Full details of opera plans are not yet confirmed, but we need to have your requests to hand as soon as bookings open; last year we were unable to go because all the tickets had been sold by the time we applied!  It is expected that the price for group-discount tickets will be about ฃ22.50.

Please complete the form below if you are interested, and send it to reach Jennifer Platt [preferably by e mail to j.platt@sussex.ac.uk - or phone 01273 555025, or post to 98 Beaconsfield Villas, Brighton BN1 6HE] by Tuesday August 18th.
