We are continuing to survey and replace RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) used in the original construction of our campus buildings. RAAC has now been found to have been used in the construction of seven university buildings and our first RAAC replacement project in Bramber House is now complete.
Mandela Hall
In September 2023, Mandela Hall in Falmer House was closed following a RAAC Survey. Over the past few months, investigations have been taking place to assess the condition of the RAAC panels and to plan works that will enable us to bring the hall safely back into use whilst also protecting this architecturally significant Grade I Listed building.
Over the coming months, work will be starting in Mandela Hall, that when complete, will allow Mandela Hall to reopen so that students can once again enjoy this iconic space.
The safety of students and staff remains our top priority. The condition of RAAC in each building is checked regularly and all buildings remain open and safe to use with access restrictions where necessary.
Find out more about RAAC and how we are managing it across all our impacted buildings on the Sudent Hub.
