Hundreds of students told us what they want from spaces here on campus in a survey at the end of last year – and there were some fascinating insights into how you study, work out and hang out.
Almost 2,000 students took part in the student spaces survey in November, and the results will help ensure the spaces you use are the best they can be, and that they meet your needs now - and into the future.
We’re already using the results to help plan changes to our Library and cross-campus study spaces, as well as to help us make decisions about how we best use Falmer House.
Space to study
What makes a good study space? Your top three requirements are good and consistent Wifi, peace and quiet, and a plug socket close by. Additions you crave include a distraction-free environment, good natural lighting, warmth, comfy chairs, booths for studying with others, and height-adjustable tables.
When we asked what would make you spend more time on campus, you said you want more quiet study areas, more booths and better internet speed (and stability). The good news is that work to bring a modern, secure, high-speed wired and wireless data network to campus is already underway – read more in this article.
Space to live
Those of you that live on campus were very satisfied or satisfied with your campus accommodation. But there were calls for improvements to study space in some residences, for common rooms, and for improved phone signal and WiFi coverage.
Space to meet
Falmer Bar was named your favourite place to meet (21%) followed closely by the Student Centre; 14% preferred the cafes and restaurants on campus, while 13% chose Northfield Bar and one in ten opted for the Library.
Space for sport and activities
Almost a quarter of you use the sports facilities here at Sussex. So what’s on your wishlist? Free sports, a climbing wall, options for horse riding and even a swimming pool.
The majority (76%) felt there was adequate space for activities on campus.
Ensuring accessibility
There was some feedback about making our buildings more accessible: this included Falmer House and the Library, which we’re working on, while others needed help to navigate around the Student Centre.
