Parking on campus from September

Following the easing of Government restrictions on 19 July, we are currently welcoming people back to campus and will soon be reinstating parking charges.
Applications for campus parking permits and parking passes in 2021/22 will open on Wednesday 1 September, with all previous permits expiring on 31 August.
All staff seeking to park on campus during the 2021/22 academic year are eligible to apply for:
- a parking permit: £30 per month pro-rate, paid via salary deductions
- or a free pass to park: this allows the purchase of daily scratch cards - £20 per book of 10
Staff who drive to campus only a few days each week may find that scratch cards offer a cheaper option than an annual permit. Eligable students can apply for a parking permit under exceptional circumstances.
Parking charges reinstated from 1 October
Parking charges, which have been suspended in recent months, will apply from Friday 1 October to allow staff and students to apply for permits and receive them in good time. The cost of parking has not increased since the 2020/21 academic year.
Penalty Charge Notices
Please ensure that you display your permit or pass as soon as you receive it. Scratch cards do not need to be displayed until 1 October.
Before 1 October, cars parked on campus without permits may receive a polite notice reminding drivers of the upcoming deadline – but no Penalty Charge Notices will be issued. However, Penalty Charge Notices will continue to be issued to any vehicle parked outside of designated car parking bays or in areas indicated as ‘No Parking’.
How to apply
If you are a staff member directly employed by the University (including IDS and BSMS), apply via Sussex Direct for a new permit or pass, or to renew your existing one. Navigate to 'Personal', then 'Transport'.
All other applications for parking permits should be submitted via the appropriate application form on the Transport web pages:
- All student permits, via Exceptional Circumstances
- Carer permits
- Disability or mobility issues (see below)
- Associate tutors (including doctoral and retired tutors)
Application forms will be available from 1 September.
It is not possible to apply via Sussex Direct for student permits or permits for individuals with exceptional circumstances.
If you wish to apply for a disabled or mobility issue permit, please contact the Student Support Unit (students) or Occupational Health (staff).
Third-party staff (SussexFood, Students’ Union, StudyGroup, etc.) should contact their line manager for information regarding parking permits.
Parking permit applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis – so please submit your application as promptly as possible after 1 September.
If your application is successful, you will be notified via email how and when you can collect your permit.
Reviewing parking on campus
The University is committed to a broad review of parking on campus over the coming year with an emphasis on sustainability, equality and diversity. With the University’s Remote Working Policy and hybrid teaching approach, there is likely to be a change in commuter patterns and the Transport Office will closely monitor car park usage over the coming months.
