The transformation of student housing on the East Slope of the University of Sussex campus is about to enter its final phase as six new accommodation blocks open in time for the start of term.
A total of 1,548 study bedrooms will be available from September in the new East Slope residences – including 512 rooms that have just been completed.
Accommodation has opened in phases since the contractor, Balfour Beatty, started work on site in January 2017. Construction work on the project is now almost finished and the final phase is due for completion by the start of 2021.
Francine Hill, Deputy Director of Estates, says: “The new student housing and other facilities in our East Slope development have transformed that part of campus over the last few years.
“As this project has progressed, it has brought the University’s accommodation up to date and in line with the expectations of our students.
“The new housing is part of our wider commitment to developing outstanding infrastructure and amenities on campus.
“We look forward to the completion of the remaining 569 rooms by the start of 2021.”
As well as flats and townhouses, the East Slope development includes a 24-hour reception, social hubs and laundry rooms.
And at the bottom of the East Slope, from the 2021/22 academic year a brand-new Student Centre will provide an additional focal point for student life on campus. As well as offering information, advice and support, the Student Centre will enhance the range of on-campus facilities for students with a new café and five retail outlets.
