Recent graduates and current finalists have been informed today that Sussex, like many universities, has had to postpone the graduation ceremony this summer.
Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell said: "I know the decision to postpone our graduation will be disappointing for some students, but while we're starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, our graduations are a global affair
"People come from all over the world to celebrate the achievements of our students. The continuing situation with Covid-19 alongside global travel restrictions makes planning and holding large scale events very difficult at present.
"In additon, our graduation venue, the Brighton Centre, is being used as a Covid vaccination hub and we are strongly committed to supporting the NHS with this important work. This – together with continued uncertainty we are still experiencing around Covid – is why we cannot, in good conscience, go ahead with this summer’s ceremonies."
Our students will still become graduates this summer and receive their degree certificate in the post. The University has already started planning a Graduation Festival for summer 2022. This will be our largest-ever graduation and, in true Sussex style, it will be a fun celebration of our students' and alumni's success.
The Graduation Festival will be a unique event for all students and recent graduates whose ceremonies have been disrupted by Covid-19. We are determined to give them the opportunity to graduate in style and will be in touch in September with more details.
