This research project focused on identifying environmental factors associated with the incidence of a neglected tropical disease. The project, led by a team in the UK, brought together geologists, geneticists and clinicians to study the disease in two African countries. The project also involved raising awareness of the disease both internationally and among local communities. The funding award was catalytic, establishing a series of further studies and funding bids that built on its progress.
