Sports scholar and Geography and International Relations student James Mullineux recently experienced the highlight of his refereeing career so far when he refereed his first national final. The match in question was the U16 National Cup Final in Manchester between Manchester Magic and Bristol Academy Flyers which Manchester won 98-68. This came soon after James was part of the history-making trio that became the youngest team of officials to referee a Division 1 men’s game. With a combined age of only 62, the trio led the match between Derby Trailblazers and Nottingham Hoods which saw Derby victorious over their local rivals.
James hopes that in future he can referee many more national finals, and Sussexsport will continue to support him in his journey. The Sussexsport scholarship programme is proud to support participants in sport other than players or athletes, as we recognise the importance of their contribution and the commitment that is involved to officiate at a high level.
