"What (if anything) can the UK learn from Canada's experience of Medical Assistance in Dying?"
Thursday 13 February 17:30 until 19:30
University of Sussex Campus : Moot Room
Speaker: Professor Daniel Weinstock
Part of the series: Healthcare Law Research Group
Join us for a lecture and discussion with Professor Daniel Weinstock (holder of the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy at McGill University). Canada has gone further than most jurisdictions in legalizing assisted dying, expanding access beyond terminal illness to cases of chronic suffering and, controversially, mental illness. At a time when Parliament is considering The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, it is timely to consider what lessons, if any, Canada's experience of (MAiD) holds for the UK. Professor Weinstock, one of the leading thinkers on the medical ethics of assisted dying, is superbly positioned to offer such reflections.
With a response from Paul Bowen KC, this event promises a thought-provoking discussion on one of the most complex issues in contemporary bioethics and law. Whether you’re a scholar, practitioner, a student or a member of the public who wants to be informed, don’t miss this chance to explore this important issue at the intersection of law, medicine, and public policy.
Refreshments will be served after the discussion.
