"Without wildlife there’ll be no food for people."

Zoology undergraduate, Robbie Hoar, says he has always been interested in growing food plants. After applying for an allotment as soon as moved to Sussex, he found out about the Sussex Roots society - a community garden on campus - and joined that. The Society was then approached by esteemed Education Lecturer, Dr John Parry, who asked us if they would be interested in taking his new Creating a Forest Food Garden module.

About 'Creating a Forest Food Garden' elective module leader, John Parry

As an associate of the Panel for Education for Sustainable Development, John played a key role in establishing education for sustainable development in the National Curriculum of 2000. He has led environmental projects at Moulsecoomb, Whitehawk, Bevendean and Coldean primary schools in Brighton, and worked with Barcombe, St Pancras, Rodmell and Wallands Primary Schools in a Pupils as Scientists project supported by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

John has been awarded two Earthwatch fellowships to Hungary and Costa Rica, advised the Dubai government on setting up out-of-school environmental clubs and is a visiting fellow of the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University. John established the first Junior Management Board for a Local Nature Reserve in England in 1996 and led on several environmental education campaigns and initiatives culminating in the building of the Linklater Pavilion in Lewes as a local community hub for the study of environmental change – recognised with an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List of 2017. 

John is one of three founding Directors of Green United, a local schools environmental initiative, and set up the 'Creating a Forest Food Garden' elective module for second year students on campus in Septemebr 2020.
