Professor Joseph Alcamo, Director of Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP) made the following statement in light of the release of the new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on land use and climate change
"The new IPCC report has two big messages.
The first is that we can't solve our big problems in isolation of each other. Providing enough nutritious food for the world depends on how we solve the climate crisis; and conversely, protecting global climate depends on how we produce our food. Rather than a "food/nutrition" problem or "climate" problem we have a "sustainability" problem. I'm happy that researchers here in Sussex are taking a broad sustainability approach and digging into the interlinkages among food, climate, and other challenges.
The second is that there are practical things that everyone can do to boost food security and protect climate. Among other things, we can eat less meat and use less palm oil grown unsustainably. Food security and climate protection are two of the biggest challenges facing humanity and we all have a role to play in their solution."
